Facelift for Kelmscott town centre
8/11/06
The long-awaited upgrade of the Kelmscott town centre is a step closer with the awarding of a contract for landscaping works.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister and Armadale MLA Alannah MacTiernan said the contract for the landscaping works had been awarded to Environmental Industries.
"Work begins next month on the $650,000 contract which is part of a program to upgrade the Kelmscott town centre," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The first stage will focus on Albany Highway from Gilwell Avenue to Page Road and will include plantings on the verges, at intersections and along the median strips.
"The design incorporates a mix of indigenous species and exotics to represent both the natural environment and the impact of early European settlement in Kelmscott.
"More claret ash trees will be planted along the verges to supplement those already there, with jacarandas at key intersections to reflect existing plantings in the area.
"Low level native plantings in the median strips will include species from the Darling scarp and nearby riverine environments.
"The plan also provides for new paving, and stylish new lighting along the highway."
The Minister said the landscaping would provide a colourful and distinctive face for Kelmscott and give it a unique character as part of the Armadale Redevelopment Authority's work to rejuvenate Kelmscott.
The landscaping plans were prepared in consultation with the City of Armadale's Parks Department.
