The Carpenter Government has announced it will spend $120,000 to kick-start Forrestfield Senior High School's transformation into a sports academy next year.
Education and Training Minister Mark McGowan visited the school today to announce it would receive $40,000 a year, over the next three years, from the State Government.
"Forrestfield Senior High School has existing specialist programs in swimming, netball, cricket and boys and girls' soccer, with Australian Rules Football and rugby coming on stream next year," Mr McGowan said.
"As a sports academy, Forrestfield students will have access to highly specialised sports training and mentoring, along with regular academic classes.
"Expert staff, including coaches possessing high credentials, will help students develop their sporting talents, increase self confidence and enhance their ability to successfully meet and balance the physical and emotional demands of their sport and academic programs."
The Minister said Forrestfield Senior High School's sport teams had a great track record of participation and achievement in local, regional, interstate and international competitions.
"Next year, teams from the school will travel to competitions in Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and overseas to New Zealand and Singapore," he said.
Forrestfield Senior High School has exceptional sporting facilities, including an eight-lane heated indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, strength and conditioning centre, tennis courts, basketball court, cricket nets, and playing fields for football, rugby and soccer.
Mr McGowan said the Carpenter Government was using the State's strong economy to provide better education facilities for all young Western Australians.
