Fremantle's NightRider bus services are proving popular with nightclub patrons and have reduced taxi queues in the port city.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said that the three buses had helped 542 people get home in the early hours of the past two Sunday mornings.
"Fremantle's party people seem to be making increasing use of the service, with 220 people using the buses on the first week and 322 on the second," Ms MacTiernan said.
"So far, there have been few security or safety problems with the service and waiting times for taxis have been reduced from more than 40 minutes to about 20 minutes.
"If this performance continues over the next month we will work on introducing a similar service to Northbridge."

The Minister said the Saturday night/Sunday Morning NightRider buses each made five trips starting at 12.30am, with the last leaving at 4.30am. The fare was $5 and passengers could get off anywhere along the route.

After doing the rounds of the main nightspots, the buses leave from Fremantle Interchange into Market Street / South Terrace and along three routes:

  • Canning Highway: along Parry Street, Queen Victoria Street / Canning Highway, Henley Street and Ley Street to a stop near Manning Road;
  • Leach Highway: along Parry Street, High Street / Leach Highway, Karel Avenue and Keith Road to a stop near Rossmoyne High School; and
  • South Street: along South Street to a stop near Bullcreek Shopping Centre.
