Acting Regional Development Minister Kim Chance today announced the Kimberley's Kundat Djaru Aboriginal Corporation had received funds to begin construction of the new $912,000 Yaruman Art and Culture Centre, with the first instalment of an $88,000 grant.
Mr Chance said the long-awaited building project would provide more gallery and working space for an established indigenous arts enterprise whose vibrant art was now gaining national recognition.
The new building would include an artist's workshop, office and art storage space, a resource area for a gallery and meeting space, and accommodation for a full-time co-ordinator.
The State Government would contribute a further $280,000 through Lotterywest.
Central Kimberley-Pilbara MLA Tom Stephens said the funds would be used to assist with the construction and fit-out of the centre, which was expected to be completed by the end of the year.
"This is one of a range of measures to assist in improving the quality of life in indigenous communities - a key factor in the State Government's response to the Gordon Inquiry," Mr Stephens said.
Mr Chance said the Carpenter Government was committed to encouraging, promoting and supporting the sustainable development of, and promoting partnerships with, indigenous communities.
The Kundat Djaru, or Ringer Soak community as it is also known, is located 170km south-east of Halls Creek in the Kimberley region.
Funding for the centre has been provided from the Carpenter Government's Regional Investment Fund.
