An amount of $850,000 has been allocated to upgrade a 20km unsealed section of the Goldfields Highway, 60km west of the Wiluna townsite.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today that Macmahon Contractors Pty Ltd had been awarded the contract for gravel sheeting works on the highway.
"The gravel sheeting works will improve drainage and enhance the driving surface, as well as reduce vehicle running costs," Ms MacTiernan said.
"This section of road forms an important part of the Goldfields Highway linking Kalgoorlie with the mining, pastoral and aboriginal communities of the northern Goldfields who use this road frequently."
Mining and Pastoral MLC Vince Catania welcomed the announcement saying an improved road surface on Goldfields Highway would benefit all those who used it.
"Goldfields Highway plays an important strategic part in the Esperance road network and I welcome this further commitment by the Carpenter Government to regional roads and services," Mr Catania said.
This work is in addition to the $730,000 spent earlier this year to upgrade the Jeedamaya Floodway, which was reconstructed to improve road access along the highway.
The contract, which is funded by the State Government's road maintenance funds, is scheduled to commence this month, with work estimated to be completed by early July 2007.
Macmahon Contractors is the term network contractor for the Main Roads Goldfields- Esperance region who will manage the project.
