Iconic Carnarvon police and court complex
24/01/07
Premier Alan Carpenter has today announced a new $40million combined police and court complex to be built in Carnarvon.
Mr Carpenter said the complex was one of the largest State Government investments in the town's history.
The Premier flew to Carnarvon with Police Minister John Kobelke and Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan to discuss the location for the new complex with shire councillors and officials.
Mr Carpenter said the State Government had earmarked the Civic Precinct, bounded by Olivia Terrace, Robinson Street and Camel Lane, within Carnarvon's central business district for the new complex.
"This is an important community facility, so it is vital that we get it right," the Premier said.
"To ensure we do that, the State Government is keen to partner Carnarvon Shire Council, local stakeholders and the public in its construction.
"We have a golden opportunity to integrate the new complex with Carnarvon's vision for the town centre.
"We will continue to work closely with all those involved on the location and design of what I believe will become and iconic civic building in the town."
Mr Carpenter said he was relying on local member Fred Riebeling to work closely with the local community to ensure the best outcome for Carnarvon.
Mr Riebeling said the project was an exciting development which continued the State Government's major investment in the town's future.
The police station alone would have a complement of 32 staff and provide three shifts over a 24-hour period, seven days a week.
It would include the latest state-of-the-art video conferencing and digital recording facilities and public interview rooms, staff amenities and a modern custodial facility.
The court and justice facility would comprise a courthouse and a Community Justice Services Centre. There would be one superior courtroom, one magistrate's courtroom, pre-trial and mediation rooms, facilities for juries and for vulnerable and protected witnesses. There would also be office accommodation for the judiciary and courts administration.
The station and court complex design would incorporate local design guidelines and the State Government's sustainability requirements.
