A contract has been awarded to upgrade the intersection of Leach Highway and Manning Road in Cannington.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today that Works Infrastructure Pty Ltd had been awarded the $600,000 contract to complete the project.
The work, which represented part of the Local Impacts Committee (LIC) initiatives, would involve:

  • the installation of two traffic signal mast arm posts along both approaches of Leach Highway;
  • replacement of the existing traffic signal aspects with light emitting diodes (LED) lanterns on all signal poles;
  • modifying both left slip turns from Leach Highway to Manning Road from the existing 12m turn radius to a 15m turn radius;
  • extending both right turn lanes on Leach Highway and the left turn/deceleration lane on the Leach Highway north approach; and
  • improving the crossing environment for pedestrians, including Walk/Don't Walk signals, zebra crossings on both left slip lanes, and upgrading the ramp profiles and alignments.
The LIC, chaired by Riverton MLA Tony McRae, includes representatives from local and State Governments, the community and the freight industry.
"The committee has worked hard to examine ways of improving the safety and efficiency of the roads in our area," Mr McRae said.
"The Leach Highway and Manning Road intersection has a high number of rear-end crashes on all approaches and the proposed work will help reduce these types of crashes and improve overall safety at the site."
Works are expected to start in September and be completed by December.
Main Roads WA metropolitan region will manage the project.
