Jurien Bay airstrip revamped
28/4/06
Planning and Infrastructure Minister today officially opened an upgraded airstrip at Jurien Bay, on the State's central coast.
"We are pleased to have been able to contribute $130,000 upgrading the Jurien Bay airstrip, complementing the significant contribution of the Shire of Dandaragan and the local community," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The shire and the local community with their contribution of $199,000 have done an outstanding job respectively.
"As a result, the Jurien Bay airstrip has been upgraded to provide an all weather 24/7 airport and much improved access for business and leisure users and essential services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
"Importantly, a new pilot activated runway lighting system has been installed, increasing reliability and reducing the workload burden on St John Ambulance officers and volunteers, who were required to prepare for any night landings by distributing and then retrieving battery powered runway lights.
"The runway has been extended, sealed and completed, with runway markings to improve access during poor weather. Electric fences have also been erected around the airport, to control wildlife and provide an additional level of safety."
A transfer facility including toilet and carport has been constructed, providing all-weather shelter for pilots, medical staff and patients being transported to and from aircraft.
"This project demonstrates what can be achieved through partnerships between State and local government and communities," the Minister said.
The State Government, through its Regional Airports Development Scheme, has provided two previous grants to assist in upgrading airports like the Jurien Bay airstrip.
"The Regional Airports Development Scheme is the best airport infrastructure program in Australia," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Under the scheme, the Western Australian Government has contributed $21million in partnership with local governments to projects totalling nearly $53million at more than 100 regional airports."
