A newly released Kewdale-Hazelmere Integrated Masterplan provides clear direction to local governments and the State Government for integrated transport and land use planning in the area.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the masterplan area included Western Australia's primary intermodal freight facility at Kewdale, the Forrestfield rail staging area and Perth Airport.
"Efficient freight movement is essential to our economy, so we must ensure that we can accommodate the expected increase in freight volume and movements over the next 30 years," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Kewdale-Hazelmere was identified in the Freight Network Review as a major multi-modal site and the main inland focus for intrastate and interstate freight movements in the metropolitan region.
"The masterplan emphasises the importance of ensuring that this air, road, rail and servicing infrastructure is efficient and protected.
"Key aspects include defining appropriate land use areas and related road/rail infrastructure requirements, so as to maximise the potential for future freight-related industrial growth.
"The masterplan recommendations will protect the study area's future role in the freight network by ensuring that surrounding land uses are compatible with freight functions."
The Minister said that in preparing the masterplan, extensive consultation with Government agencies, local government, industry and other stakeholders helped ensure that all relevant issues were identified and considered.
In addition, workshops were held to promote discussion and resolution of the issues raised and to obtain broad consensus on appropriate recommendations.
More detailed engagement with stakeholders would now take place to integrate development on airport land more thoroughly with the surrounding infrastructure and ensure the successful implementation of masterplan recommendations.
