Land Information Minister Michelle Roberts today officially launched Landgate, the Western Australian land information authority.
The new agency, which is a statutory body, heralds a new era in the rapidly expanding business of land information.
"The creation of Landgate will have a huge impact on the way land information is accessed in WA," Mrs Roberts said.
"As a statutory authority, the revenue Landgate generates will be reinvested into the running of the agency - substantially reducing its dependence on Government funding."
The Minister said Landgate would focus on actively developing new technology, initiatives and opportunities.
"Landgate will continue to provide all Western Australians with the same high quality services as its predecessor, the Department of Land Information (DLI)," she said.
Mrs Roberts said the agency's core Government and community obligations remained the same, with the added advantage of more choice and improved services.
"The agency has a strong commercial focus and the potential to be self-supporting," she said.
"Landgate signals a fresh, innovative approach to conducting the business of land information in this State - an approach reflected in the outstanding design of its newly refurbished Midland customer service area."
The agency will maintain the State's official register of land ownership and surveying information and also manage land and property valuations in WA.
