Locals snap up 60 residential lots in Exmouth
27/9/07
All 60 residential lots in the State Government's new development at Skipjack Circle, Exmouth, located one kilometre north of the town centre, were sold today by public ballot.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the ballot system, which was used throughout the North-West, ensured people living and working in Exmouth had a chance to secure property in the expanding town.
"All lots went to Exmouth residents or people working in the town," Ms MacTiernan said.
"This is a great result for the local community and will allow many people to build their own homes in the town."
Local MLC Vince Catania said today's result was a fantastic success for the residents of Exmouth and the people working in the region.
"Exmouth is one of the fastest growing areas in northern Western Australia and is a tourism hot spot," Mr Catania said.
"The development of the Exmouth Marina is taking shape with more people flocking to live and work here.
"We must have the capability to meet the demand for residential land, particularly for the local community.
"It is heartening that the Government is committed to the growth of our region and had the foresight to fast-track the release of the land that was sold today."
The Minister said the LandCorp development included a range of lot sizes from 506sqm to 1,032sqm, with prices ranging from $180,000 to $245,000. The development surrounded 3,401sqm of public parkland, including playground and barbecue facilities.
"The release of this residential land was brought forward to help alleviate some of the pressure on local housing in Exmouth," she said.
"In addition, the initial release was doubled from 30 to 60 lots in response to demand."
Civil works commenced on site in August 2007 and are due to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.
Sale conditions will require development within 30 months of settlement and the pre-selling of lots has been designed to provide time to organise construction.
Ms MacTiernan said a number of lots were allocated to the shire and Government regional officers' housing to accommodate essential service providers.
A nine-unit group housing site would also be included in the development and was expected to be offered for sale by design tender in the first half of 2008.
Planning to identify future parcels of land suitable for residential development was under way and would be accelerated once the results of the shire's flood mitigation study were known.
Work on WA's longest single-span footbridge over water at Exmouth Marina Village was progressing well and was on schedule for completion in December.
