Miners urged to shave their heads for charity
8/2/07
Miners, engineers and resource executives are being encouraged to shave their heads to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation WA.
The call came as Resources Minister Francis Logan today launched the World's Greatest Shave Mine Challenge - and got his own head shaved.
Mr Logan, who is the ambassador for the inaugural mine challenge, said mining companies and their employees should be encouraged to get involved in the event.
"The resources industry is currently receiving unprecedented publicity and awareness as the resources boom continues to deliver wealth to the community at large," he said.
"I urge miners, engineers, management and trades people throughout the resources sector to shave their head for a good cause or support their colleagues who do.
"And at the end of the event, we will acknowledge the most generous mine site in the State.
"The Leukaemia Foundation is also striving to deliver wealth to the community in the form of patient support and research into cures.
"It needs strong corporate partners, such as the resources industry, to help them raise awareness and publicity for the work they do for everyday Western Australians."
The foundation hopes to raise $1.1million from the World's Greatest Shave and Mine Challenge to develop a specifically designed facility that will care for patients and their families.
"Support and involvement in the challenge will help the foundation continue to support the 17 WA families who face a new diagnosis of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or related blood disorders every week," the Minister said.
"The money raised in this event is vital in helping the foundation continue its great work."
