Minister welcomes new Shire of Northam
22/6/07
Local Government Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today welcomed the amalgamation of the Town and Shire of Northam which will create the new Shire of Northam from July 1 this year.
The State Government has committed $725,000 from the Connecting Local Governments program to assist with a smooth transition of services to the new shire.
"I am pleased to see these two local governments embracing the opportunity for structural reform," Ms Ravlich said.
"The amalgamation will lead to a more sustainable and consolidated local government which will deliver more efficient and effective services to the Northam community.
"It will also avoid any duplication of services, with future cost savings being directed into important community facilities and services."
The Minister said while the State Government remained committed to no forced amalgamations, it would continue to support local governments that sought amalgamation initiatives in order to deliver cost benefits and positive outcomes for communities.
"I congratulate the Shire and Town of Northam councillors on working well together to promote growth and prosperity for their region," she said.
Mr Gavan Troy has been appointed as commissioner to oversee the new Shire of Northam until a new council can be elected at the local government elections on October 20.
"I welcome Gavan Troy as commissioner," Ms Ravlich said.
"Gavan has a strong background in local government as a councillor with the Shire of Mundaring and he was the previous commissioner to the Shire of York.
"I am sure his guidance will assist in paving the way for a strong and sustainable local government in Northam."
