Naala Moort (Our Family) - Indigenous Soccer Tournament 2006
15/5/06
As the Socceroos prepare for their World Cup challenge, the Naala Moort Indigenous Soccer Tournament will bring the world game to the local indigenous community.
Sport and Recreation Minister John Kobelke said the Naala Moort Indigenous Soccer Tournament would be staged at Langley Park on June 7, just two days before the FIFA World Cup opener in Germany.
"More than 150 players took part last year and in a World Cup year with the Socceroos having qualified, there is a lot of excitement about the 2006 tournament," Mr Kobelke said.
"We expect record numbers and believe tournaments like this will help develop a better representation of indigenous players in the Socceroos and Matildas squads in years to come."
Surveys show that participation rates for Aboriginal players are already on the increase, despite the stronghold AFL still has among young indigenous sportspeople.
"AFL star Adam Goodes was a junior representative soccer player, and if we can keep young talent like that in the sport, who knows where it could lead," the Minister said.
Mr Kobelke said the six-a-side competition would include entries for primary and high school teams, as well as women's and corporate indigenous sides.
Teams interested in playing are urged to get their nominations in quickly by emailing kerry.henry@dsr.wa.gov.au or by calling 9492 9700.
Naala Moort is supported by a strong team, including the Department of Sport and Recreation's indigenous sport unit, Football West, City of Perth and Perth Soccer Club, among a host of other significant players.
