National interest in providing workers' accommodation in Karratha
7/11/07
More than 200 companies Australia-wide have registered interest through a national call to construct a short-term 'motel-like' accommodation facility for up to 1,000 workers in Karratha to fast-track home building.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said that of the 200 expressions of interest, 19 formal proposals were received for the 20ha Gap Ridge site.
A selection panel would now assess the submissions, with the preferred proponent to be announced within the next month.
"The scope of submissions received, and the capacity of developers to get the project under way immediately, makes the Government confident that this facility will effectively address urgent accommodation needs," Ms MacTiernan said.
"It will also provide a much-needed boost to building capacity in the Pilbara.
"The Carpenter Government is using our strong economy to deliver better services to the regions."
The expression of interest (EOI) process follows an agreement between the State Government and Woodside to provide up to 50 beds at Woodside's new Pluto construction camp.
This accommodation will be for the exclusive use of civil works contractors and builders at LandCorp's residential developments in Karratha. As part of the agreement, LandCorp will allocate 140 residential lots at its developments in Karratha for the long term housing needs of Woodside's permanent workforce.
North West Coastal MLA Fred Riebeling said that the agreement between the State Government and Woodside once again showed the Government's willingness to find innovative solutions to regional issues.
"The Government has recognised the importance of accommodating the growing construction workforce that is working full steam ahead to deliver new homes in Karratha," Mr Riebeling said.
"Works are well under way for a further land release at LandCorp's Nickol West development in Karratha before the end of the year and there are more than 800 additional homesites planned for Baynton West.
"Therefore the new accommodation for contractors and builders is absolutely necessary and will be highly welcomed."
