Construction of the new $29.8million Ellenbrook Secondary College is well under way in the thriving Swan region on Perth's doorstep.
Premier Alan Carpenter said the new school was set to open its doors in time for the new school year.
Mr Carpenter said Ellenbrook Secondary College would be a middle school for Years 7 to 10 with an initial intake of Years Seven and Eight in 2007.
"The school population would expand to include Year 10 students by 2009," he said.
"Ellenbrook will boast specialist science, design, technology and art facilities, as well as modern administration and student services facilities.
"The school is being built in the heart of the Ellenbrook town centre to ensure strong links with the local community.
"The college will feature shared facilities such as a library, performing arts centre, sporting and recreational amenities, in order to forge strong links between the school and the wider community.
"The City of Swan will contribute $4.75million towards the shared facilities, including the library, which will have meeting and function rooms available to the community."
Mr Carpenter today toured the construction site with Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich and Swan Hills MLA Jaye Radisich.
Ms Ravlich said Mr Leigh Cottrill had been announced as the foundation principal of Ellenbrook Secondary College.
"Mr Cottrill will focus on creating an environment where parents, staff and the community can work together to provide opportunities for students to succeed in their formative schooling years," she said.
"The college will offer a diverse and exciting curriculum with a local flavour, such as an instrumental music program and performance workshops through our partnership with the Ellenbrook Cultural foundation."
The Premier said the State Government was building a world-class education system and that meant providing students with the best schools, the best facilities, and classrooms equipped with the latest in computer technology.
"The State Government has promised to build 40 new schools worth more than $400million and to spend $300million to upgrade existing schools, with another $300million allocated for school maintenance work," he said.
"We have already built, planned or announced 35 new schools, including 23 new primary schools and 12 new secondary schools."
