New Perth fire station
26/02/07
A new $9.5million city fire station is to be built in Wellington Street, Perth.
Emergency Services Minister John Kobelke today announced the tender process for construction of the new station.
Funding for the project was approved by the State Government early in 2005.
"The Government's decision to replace Perth Fire Station followed intensive research and planning by FESA and is in line with a commitment to improve the quality of its services," Mr Kobelke said.
"The new building will replace the existing fire station located in Hay Street, which dates back to 1979.
"Due to come on-stream in 2008, the Wellington Street station has been designed to suit today's firefighting needs and improve efficiency.
"It will be sited 500m from the current station in Hay Street, with quick access to the Graham Farmer Freeway, as well as better access to both the railway line and North-South freeway ramps. Egress and traffic flow will also be made easier.
"When it comes to house fires or rescues, every second counts. Any reduction to response time is welcome, as it can literally mean the difference between life and death in an emergency."
The Minister said the future of the current Perth Fire Station complex, which also housed FESA executive and administration, was under review.
"It is fitting that our Fire and Rescue Service career firefighters will have their own state-of-the-art station, built to contemporary standards," he said.
"By separating the physical location of firefighters and other essential functions of the agency, such as communications control, our risk management will be enhanced.
"The new fire station will ensure that the community of an ever-changing, modern city like Perth is well served for the next 30 years."
Fire crews will operate from the Wellington Street station seven days a week, round the clock.
Station features will include operational and training areas; four engine bays; sleeping quarters with ensuite bathrooms; a kitchen and gymnasium; plus an area for public display of historic memorabilia.
