Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts said the State Government's Joint Venture land development in Wellard, south of Perth, was progressing well, with 2,700 lots to be developed.
Peel MLA Paul Papalia, who represented Mrs Roberts at the event, today welcomed local residents, community groups and leaders.
The State Government entered into a Joint Venture with Peet Limited in 2003 to develop land south of Wellard Road in the Town of Kwinana.
The Minister said the State Government was committed to creating a new, vibrant and sustainable community at Wellard and providing more opportunities for quality and affordable housing.
To date, more than 600 lots have been purchased.
The Joint Venture Program contributes to the supply of land in Western Australia and aims to:

  • facilitate home ownership opportunities, particularly for first home buyers, through the provision of affordable land and housing;
  • create attractive and sustainable communities through design innovation and excellence; and
  • provide land for public rental and community housing which is integrated into the community.
Upon completion, the Village at Wellard will be home to 2,700 families and feature 30ha of landscaped parks, 17ha of native bush and 10ha of wetlands.
Mrs Roberts said the Village at Wellard was the first dedicated transport-oriented development in Perth's southern corridor, with a pedestrian-friendly village centred around the Wellard train station, on the soon-to-be operational Perth-to-Mandurah railway line.
Wellard has won numerous awards since its inception, including the WA Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) award last November for environmental excellence.
This award recognised the estate as a benchmark in environmental planning and conservation, and qualified the development as a finalist in the national PIA Awards for 2007.
The Village at Wellard has also won the WA Landscape Industries Association award for best Environmental/Rehabilitation/Conservation project, and the WA Housing Industry Association GreenSmart Awards Development/Estate of the Year category.
The welcome event was one of many similar events planned for the community, giving new residents a great opportunity to meet their neighbours and connect with local community groups and leaders.
