New accommodation boost for young homeless in Bunbury
22/2/07
Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts today officially opened Bendat House, a new six-bedroom house for homeless youth in Bunbury.
The home, which will be run by the St John of God Foundation's Lighthouse Project, was made possible through a $590,000 donation from the State Government.
Mrs Roberts said the State Government was pleased to contribute to the land and building costs for the project worth $590,000, to support the outstanding results achieved by St John of God with other Bendat Houses around the State.
There are currently Bendat Houses in Wanneroo, Geraldton and Wilson.
"The homes provide a loving and nurturing environment for young people aged 15 to 22, and it is an opportunity for them to realise their potential and successfully take part in society," the Minister said.
"Being homeless means more than just being without a place to live; it can mean being isolated and excluded from the social and economic opportunities that most of us are so fortunate to enjoy.
"Bendat House is all about giving back to young people these opportunities."
Mrs Roberts said the house would offer both emotional and physical support to help those who stayed there. It was also hoped that the young people who stayed at the accommodation would use the opportunity to improve their relationships with their families, return to school, or acquire living and work skills.
"The house will be a springboard to a new and better life," the Minister said.
Mrs Roberts said the Department of Housing and Works donated the house and land package through their Crisis Accommodation Program.
The Minister thanked the St John of God Foundation, Lotterywest, Mr Jack Bendat, the builders B G Grieve and the architect Ilias Iliadis for making the home available.
"By working together to build a house, we are also working together to help rebuild the lives of many young people in the South-West," she said.
