A new bridge will be built on Mallokup Road over the Capel River in Western Australia's South-West region.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today that Structural Systems (Western) Pty Ltd had been awarded the $1.8million contract to carry out the bridgeworks, west of the Capel townsite.
Ms MacTiernan said that the work would involve the demolition of the existing timber bridge and the construction of a new, single lane concrete bridge.
"The work will significantly improve the capacity and safety of the site," she said.
"During the last inspection of the current bridge, which was built nearly 60 years ago, it was revealed that the timber was showing signs of deterioration and the road surface was in bad condition.
"Replacing the old timber bridge with a new concrete bridge will be a significant improvement for road users."
South-West MLC Adele Farina welcomed the bridge replacement.
"The current bridge has served the community well for a very long time but commuter safety is paramount," Ms Farina said.
"It is also pleasing that Structural Systems has responded so positively to being awarded the contract.
"The company has a strong presence in WA's southern region and has declared it will use more than $500,000 in regional goods and services."
The contract is due to start at the end of the year and be completed in early 2008.
The contract will be managed by Main Roads Western Australia South West Region.
