New landfill gas generator for Perth
7/7/06
Perth's 10th landfill gas generator - where methane is converted to electricity - was officially opened in Henderson today.
Energy Minister Francis Logan opened the facility, saying landfill gas generators around the metropolitan area now contributed 24MW of power to the main grid - enough to supply 33,000 households with electricity.
Mr Logan said the new 2.1MW landfill gas generator at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park was also expected to reduce greenhouse gases by over one million tonnes over the next 16 years.
"The Henderson Renewable Energy Facility will produce two benefits - it will remove potentially harmful gases from the atmosphere and produce electricity from a sustainable source," the Minister said.
"The facility serves as an example of environmentally friendly energy generation and also contributes to developing community awareness of the benefits of renewable energy."
Mr Logan said the facility would be owned and operated by the company, Waste Gas Resources.
He said the $3.8million project would generate energy that would be sold to the State's retail electricity enterprise Synergy.
The Minister congratulated the City of Cockburn and Waste Gas Resources for their approach to realising the environmental benefits gained by generating electricity from landfill gas.
"The City of Cockburn is committed to treating waste in an environmentally friendly manner and the new Henderson Renewable Energy Facility is a step towards achieving that objective," he said.
"The Carpenter Government is also committed to achieving the greater use of renewable energy in Western Australia and we are delighted to see this project come to fruition."
Mr Logan said the State Government was aiming to produce six per cent of electricity from a renewable source by 2010.
"This facility will contribute to the achievement of that target," he said.
"It is an excellent example of industry and local and State Governments working together to deliver environmental and economic outcomes."
The other landfill gas generators are in Redhill, Mt Claremont, Canning Vale, Kalamunda, Rockingham, Gosnells, Tamala Park, Noranda and South Cardup.
