Garrett Hospitality Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of the Prendiville Group, has signed a 30-year lease as the new operator of Rottnest Island's landmark heritage-listed hotel, the Quokka Arms.
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said the Prendiville group was a Western Australian family-based business which already managed successful tourism operations such as Sandalford Winery and Fremantle's Tradewinds and Norfolk Hotels.
"Prendiville's excellent track record and relevant experience will go a long way to ensure the successful operation of the Quokka Arms," Ms McHale said.
"As winners of the Sir David Brand Medal and Hall of Fame of WA Tourism Council, they are acknowledged as leaders in the tourism industry."
The Minister said the group would invest $6.5million into the Quokka Arms, which was the first opportunity in at least 20 years for substantial investment and conservation works.
"Investment of this magnitude from the private sector is good news for Western Australians," she said.
"People can look forward to the vibrancy that comes from a hotel with a contemporary look and feel, but which also retains the history of the island.
"Under the terms of the lease, The Governor's Residence will be restored to its former grandeur and the hotel will be regularly maintained.
"This work complements the State Government's investment into conservation works on heritage assets of more than $5million over the past five years."
Director Peter Prendiville said the group understood the importance of the Quokka Arms to the people of WA.
"The Quokka Arms is an iconic hotel on an iconic holiday island," Mr Prendiville said.
"We acknowledge our responsibility to our patrons to achieve the right blend of food and beverage choices.
"We appreciate the significance of the 19th century heritage building and are working closely with the Rottnest Island Authority and Heritage Council on final designs."
Ms McHale said major works would start next year.
