New lease on life for Pyrton
4/7/06
Pyrton, the former Disability Services Commission hostel in Eden Hill, is to receive a new lease on life following a Carpenter Government decision to clear the site.
Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts announced that demolition of Pyrton, which would cost $2.5million, would start before the end of the year.
"The nine separate buildings constructed during the late 1960s early 1970s are in very poor condition," Mrs Roberts said.
"Being purpose-built, they have limited utility today and are not considered viable to retain.
"The buildings have in recent times been extensively vandalised, so from a safety and security point of view, it is important that buildings and other structures are removed as soon as possible."
The site covers about 35ha of land overlooking the Swan River and Bennett Brook.
Bassendean MLA Martin Whitely has also been following the situation closely.
"Pyrton is a place of heritage significance to Aboriginal people as it lies within a registered site under the Aboriginal Heritage Act, so future uses therefore require a sensitive response and a requirement for formal consultation with indigenous people," Mr Whitely said.
Mrs Roberts said an extensive consultation process was undertaken with the Pyrton draft structure plan, which was released to the community for comment in August 2004.
"These decisions demonstrate an ongoing commitment by the Carpenter Government to the process of reconciliation and remediation of a site to enable future community use and enjoyment," she said.
Negotiations are continuing to determine the future of the site.
