The future of Albany's unique Whale World tourism attraction is secure, with the announcement of a 50-year lease extension.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan has approved the Albany Port Authority to issue a long-term lease to Whale World operator, the Jaycees Community Foundation (JCF).
"This announcement will secure the future of Whale World as a historic and cultural asset for the Great Southern," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The State Government is keen to support this tremendous not-for-profit organisation further in building on what is an award-winning tourist attraction."
The lease covers more than a hectare of seabed surrounding a breakwater jetty facility used for passengers at the Whale World site.
"The lease area is not required by the Port Authority for operational purposes and the conditions of the lease will see Whale World remain as a public facility for the enjoyment of the community," the Minister said.
The JCF secured Australia's last operating whaling station in 1980 and since then has invested more than $2million and countless voluntary hours in establishing Whale World.
Since commercial whaling ended in 1978, tourism initiatives associated with Albany's whaling history have provided significant economic and employment benefits to the region.
Welcoming the announcement, Albany MLA Peter Watson said the lease extension was the result of the JCF's hard work and dedication.
"Whale World is one of the world's largest whaling heritage attractions and a major tourist asset to Albany," Mr Watson said.
"I am very pleased that this world-class attraction will continue to be enjoyed by future generations in Albany, and for domestic and international visitors alike."
The lease extension will be issued by the Albany Port Authority, with the provision that should the venture move to become a commercial entity, the lease will be renegotiated.
