New mental health homes for Bentley
7/8/07
Construction has started on 15 new homes in Bentley for people with mental health problems.
Health Minister Jim McGinty said the $3.3million project would enable 25 people with manageable mental health problems to live as part of their community, while also receiving the support they required.
"The units will become long-term homes for adults with mental illnesses who do not need acute hospital care," Mr McGinty said.
"Many people with mental health problems are living in the community without the support they need.
"This development will allow them to enjoy having the independence of their own home rather than living in a hospital but they will also get help they need to manage their illness.
"The homes will give people with a mental illness what many of us take for granted, housing stability."
The one, two and three bedroom units are being built on Channon Street in Bentley. A round-the-clock on-site management team would help residents with daily living skills and treatment support.
Victoria Park MLA Ben Wyatt said one of the key elements of the homes will be the integration of the mental health residents with the local community.
"The managers will encourage residents' participation in the community by engaging them in recreational activities and skill-building programs," Mr Wyatt said.
"One in five Australians will experience a mental health problem at some time in their lives.
"Given these staggering numbers, it is critical we have a range of services in place to support them.
"These units will provide a balance of independence and assistance for those who need this service, and help to overcome the stigma surrounding people with mental illness."
BGC Construction Pty Ltd is building the homes, which are expected to be complete by mid-2008.
The project is part of the $173million WA Mental Health Strategy, which will see an additional 400 community-based places provided throughout the State.
Similar units are under construction in Albany, Busselton, Bunbury and Geraldton and are planned for Armadale, Kalamunda, Middle Swan, Osborne Park and Peel.
