The State Government has announced it will fund the construction of classrooms at Newton Moore Senior High School in Bunbury, completing the school's overhaul.
The decision comes after Education and Training and South-West Minister Mark McGowan met with the school's Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) earlier this month, at the request of South-West MLC Adele Farina.
Mr McGowan said it became clear during the meeting that the school community considered new classrooms and replacement roofing to be a vital inclusion in the upgrade.
"I am pleased to announce that as a result of that meeting, the Government has decided to increase the budget to fund the full scope of works," he said.
The upgraded school will now include:

  • a new classroom block, which will feature general classrooms, an education support learning area, staff offices, seminar rooms, a laundry, toilets and an upgraded home economics area; and
  • a new roof for the Design and Technology Centre.
This is in addition to the upgrade works already announced which include:
  • a new library resource centre;
  • new change rooms;
  • a new cafeteria; and
  • a refurbishment of student services and science rooms.
Ms Farina said a $9.5million upgrade was announced for the school in 2004, but a rise in building costs meant the original budget was not enough to fund new classrooms and a roof replacement.
"Some tough decisions had to be made about what works would be included in the upgrade, and the classroom block was initially deleted from the plans," Ms Farina said.
"I am so pleased that Mr McGowan has boosted funding for the upgrade, I am especially pleased for the school representatives that have worked so hard to see this happen."
Pindan Constructions Pty Ltd has begun initial construction work at the school. It is expected the upgrade will be complete by September 2008.
The Minister said the Carpenter Government was spending more than $300million on school capital works projects across the State this financial year.
"We have already built, planned or announced 39 new schools, 27 new primary schools and 12 new secondary schools," he said.
