Protection for rare historic Perth pair

A conservation order has been issued to prevent the demolition of an 1888 Victorian house on Adelaide Terrace, Perth.
Heritage Minister Michelle Roberts issued the order today after the City of Perth approved demolition of 257 Adelaide Terrace, against Heritage Council advice.
Mrs Roberts also directed the entry of 257 and 259 Adelaide Terrace into the State Register on an interim basis.
"Both 257 and 259 Adelaide Terrace are the last remaining pair of two storey Victorian residences in the City of Perth," the Minister said.
"The demolition of No 257 would be largely detrimental to the heritage values of the pair, and a significant loss to the State.
"Once lost, our valuable heritage cannot be regained."
The conservation order provides legal protection against demolition or other types of work which may negatively impact on this important site, but does not stop the owner developing the site.
Mrs Roberts said she was concerned City of Perth councillors were not given accurate information as part of their consideration of the development application.
"Information presented to Perth City Council failed to mention the Heritage Council's advice in relation to the development application, or that the pair of houses had been recommended to me for listing in the State Register," she said.
"The City of Perth itself recognises the exceptional significance of the house in its Local Government Inventory, which states that its conservation is essential to the heritage of the city.
"The City of Perth list also recommends the place for entry into the State Register."
The conservation order, which was signed Thursday afternoon, takes effect immediately.
"Our Government is committed to protecting Western Australia's unique lifestyle, including significant heritage sites," Mrs Roberts said.
