More than 500 seats on the inaugural passenger train journey between Perth and Mandurah on Sunday, December 23, will be available by public ballot.
Three six-car trains will undertake the inaugural journey from Perth's underground station.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said that from tomorrow Western Australians would have a week to enter the ballot with the draw scheduled for Thursday, December 6.
Ms MacTiernan said the seats would be free and included:

  • 250 seats on the journey from Perth, available by ballot to people who completed a coupon in The West Australian or Sunday Times newspapers, or registered online at http://www.pta.wa.gov.au. These would consist of 100 double and 50 single passes;
  • 200 seats available by ballot to people who worked on the project, with coupons and online registration available;
  • 70 double passes available for passengers to join the journey at stations along the route. Coupons for these would be available in local newspapers in the southern suburbs to be drawn on Tuesday, December 4; and
  • 440 seats on the inaugural return journey from Mandurah to Perth, which would be available through Mandurah radio, local papers and Mandurah MLA
    David Templeman's ministerial and electorate offices.
"This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of Western Australia's history," the Minister said.
"The new service is a major step forward in our public transport system that will bring the metropolitan area and Mandurah together."
Ms MacTiernan said people who missed out on a seat on the inaugural journey would still have plenty of opportunities to take the trip on the first day.
"Regular services will begin the same day and travel will be free all day, across the entire Transperth passenger network, including trains, buses and ferries," she said.
"There will be celebrations all along the route and plenty for train travellers to do and see.
"More than 10,000 seats will be available each way on the Southern Suburbs Railway's first day of operations and train enthusiasts will be able to take the 87-minute journey from Mandurah to Clarkson."
