Restoring the jewel of WA's caves

Jewel Cave is set to sparkle even more with the State Government providing $60,000 towards revitalising Western Australia's premier show cave.

Visiting Jewel Cave this weekend, South-West Minister Mark McGowan presented the cheque for restoration work to the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association.

"Jewel Cave is well known for its spectacular formations," Mr McGowan said.

"It was discovered more than 50 years ago and has been a popular destination for tourists and cave enthusiasts ever since.  However, one of the drawbacks of its popularity is the impact visitors and existing public infrastructure has had on the cave.

"The site needs a major makeover to help restore it to a more natural and environmentally sound state.

"These improvements will also enhance visitors' experience of the cave."

Work planned under the revitalisation project includes the removal of existing public toilets and car parks, revegetation of key areas and construction of a new interpretive centre, cafe and public facilities.

South-West MLC Adele Farina said the cave would also receive new lighting, which would not only be more environmentally friendly, but would also provide better illumination of the cave's stunning features.

"New walkways, bush tracks and signage will also be developed to display the area's unique natural beauty in a non-impacting way," Ms Farina said.

"The work is expected to cost more than $3million, which will result in the protection of an environmental treasure, while making it accessible to more people.

"It will also create an estimated eight new direct employment opportunities, as well as boost the local economy through increased visitors to the area.

"I commend the Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association, which is working hard to not only preserve Jewel Cave but make it a showpiece in an environmentally friendly way for generations to come."

The State Government funds were provided through the South West Development Commission Regional Development Scheme, which offers grants to projects and initiatives that improve the economy and lifestyle of the region.
