A total of 25 public schools across Western Australia will be the first to share in the State Government's $1million Solar Schools Program.
Energy Minister Francis Logan today released the names of the schools which will be given up to $10,000 to help them install solar panels.
"The solar panels will allow each school to produce power that will go towards meeting some of their electricity needs," Mr Logan said.
"The panels will also help to teach children and the wider community about renewable energy and energy efficiency."
The Minister said up to 100 primary and secondary public schools would receive funding during the four years of the Solar Schools Program.
The program, which is managed by the State Government's Sustainable Energy Development Office, provides rebates of 80 per cent on the cost (up to $10,000) of the solar power systems.
Mr Logan said the systems should allow the schools to save thousands of dollars in energy costs.
"As well as enabling schools to generate power that services some of their own electricity needs, the Solar Schools Program will also help reduce fossil fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
"A one-kilowatt solar system could save a school up to $400 on annual energy bills.
"And we expect to produce more savings each year as schools implement their own energy-saving initiatives as required by the program."
The following schools - 13 metropolitan and 12 regional - will be the first to receive funding under the Solar Schools Program:
