South Fremantle students hit high note with new music centre
24/2/06
The musical talents of South Fremantle Senior High School students are set to flourish with the opening of a new $1.6million state-of-the-art music centre.
Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today officially opened the music centre, during a special concert featuring the school's symphonic band.
"We do not just want smart students in Western Australia - we want to encourage creative students as well," Ms Ravlich said.
The Minister said the centre was the culmination of many years' effort by the school's music department and a dedicated group of parents, the Music Parents Subcommittee.
"The entire school community embraced the idea of a dedicated music facility for local students, and many people worked hard to bring the project to fruition," she said.
"The new centre will give South Fremantle Senior High School students fantastic opportunities to develop their musical abilities and showcase their creative talents."
The music centre includes a 120-seat performance hall, eight tuition rooms, a classroom, keyboard laboratory and recording facilities.
"The school's music students will be able to practice and perform live music as well as learn how to record their own music," Ms Ravlich said.
The Minister said the new centre was a great asset for the school's long-running and highly successful music program.
"South Fremantle Senior High School music students have participated in a number of music events and have even toured to the Eastern States and New Zealand, including a performance at the Sydney Opera House," she said.
"The new centre will allow staff to extend the school's music program to further develop the students' talents."
The centre will also be available for community use by arrangement.
The Carpenter Government is committed to delivering a world-class education to all students.
