South Fremantle Senior High School's reputation as a breeding ground for young sportsmen and women will be strengthened by the addition of a soccer program and the development of other new specialist sports programs.
Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich said South Fremantle Senior High School already had a high profile as a specialist sporting school through its baseball program and this would be further enhanced with the soccer program.
The soccer program would be moved from John Curtin College so it would begin to focus on its new role as a specialist arts school.
"From the beginning of 2008, John Curtin College of the Arts will cater for gifted and talented arts students and, from then, Year Eight students selected for the soccer program will go to South Fremantle Senior High School," Ms Ravlich said.
"Other specialist sports programs will also be developed and located at South Fremantle from 2008.
"South Fremantle High School is already an exciting place to learn.
"Students can take part in Marine Studies Program in Years Eight, Nine and 10 and a program in Years 11 and 12 which helps them gain theoretical and practical experience in a range of careers in the marine and maritime industries.
"The music centre that opened at South Fremantle last year will support a strong contemporary music program and provide pathways to the music industry and vocational programs in hospitality and tourism will be strengthened to keep pace with Fremantle's continuing development as a major tourism precinct.
"Students will also be able to embark on exciting physical education studies providing a priceless entree into tertiary study in areas such as physiotherapy and sports science."
The Minister said the school would be expected to meet high academic standards to complement its sporting achievements.
"While I am thrilled we are able to provide these opportunities for gifted young sportspeople, the community at large demands they be given a solid education," she said.
"The State Government is committed to providing all Western Australians with a world-class public education system to meet the challenges generated by our booming economy.
"Specialist schools cater for our talented students in all areas, including vocational education and training and sport."
