The Peel Region is set to benefit from the State Government's record $21.6billion capital works program over the next four years.
Treasurer Eric Ripper said a massive $5.8billion had been allocated to critical infrastructure projects in the 2007-08 Budget to ensure the State continued to grow and meet capacity demands both now and into the future.
"Capital works spending helps us to build an even better Western Australia for ourselves and our children," Mr Ripper said.
"The State is thriving and we want to ensure that it translates into benefits for all Western Australians, particularly those living in the regions."
Highlights of the regional capital works program for the Peel Region include:

  • $218.7million for the construction of the new Perth-Bunbury Highway;
  • $65.2million on transmission lines to Alinta's cogeneration plant and to the Boddington gold mine;
  • $59.3million to improve water supply, including $35.4million on wastewater improvements and $11.2million for the Halls Head wastewater treatment plant upgrade;
  • $9.1million to complete construction of the marina operations centre in Mandurah;
  • $7.3million for a new primary school at South Halls Head; and
  • $5.9million for new emergency facilities at the Peel Health Campus and a new Murray District Health Centre at Pinjarra.
Peel Minister David Templeman said the Carpenter Government was committed to using WA's booming economy to deliver better services to the regions.
"We are absolutely passionate about ensuring that regional communities - the people who are the very soul of this State - have access to quality services and infrastructure," Mr Templeman said.
"Under a Labor Government, the Peel region has thrived.
"It is an exciting area that is burgeoning beyond belief, and we need to make sure that it has the infrastructure for further growth.
"This Budget will continue to encourage growth in the region by promoting business, employment, tourism and importantly, community confidence and pride."
Mr Ripper said it was important to realise that every cent of the Budget surplus was being put to good use.
"All of the surplus is going into infrastructure or retiring State debt - that means a healthy economy now and an even brighter future for all Western Australians," he said.
