State Government funding supports crematorium upgrade for Geraldton Cemetery
9/11/07
Regional Development Minister Jon Ford today announced that the Geraldton Cemetery Board had received $55,000 to assist with revitalising the facilities at the Geraldton crematorium.
The grant was part of a $65,000 commitment provided through the State Government's Regional Investment Fund.
Mr Ford said the upgrade would provide a more comfortable and suitable environment for the bereaved.
"The current crematorium facilities are basic. The pergola structure is open to the elements and there is limited seating for mourners," he said.
"The upgraded all-weather facility will be a vast improvement, with the capacity to cater for more than 300 people in comfort."
The crematorium upgrade is a $680,000 project.
In addition to the State Government grant, funds have been provided from the Mid West Development Commission, the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services and a range of local governments.
Geraldton MLA Shane Hill congratulated the Geraldton Cemetery Board on their efforts in co-ordinating this much-needed project.
"The Geraldton Crematorium services not only the residents of Geraldton, but includes the full Mid-West region and some areas of the Gascoyne," Mr Hill said.
"It is appropriate that the facility be upgraded to be of a fitting standard."
"The upgrade is expected to be completed by mid-December.
"This is an excellent example of the community and the three tiers of government working together to improve the quality of services for Western Australians."
The State Government's $80million Regional Investment Fund was established to assist with the economic and social development of regional WA and improve regional community access to services.
