Take time to vote - Joondalup and York local government elections
24/04/06
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Jon Ford today urged Joondalup and York electors have their say about the future of their community by taking time to vote in the May 6 local government elections.
Mr Ford said many local governments now controlled multi-million dollar budgets and had moved a long way from being responsible only for roads, rates and rubbish.
"Local governments now act as advocates for their communities and are important providers of social services and facilities such as retirement villages and sporting and community centres," he said.
"Many people have a keen interest in the issues that face their community and a key way they can shape the future of their district is by voting for their council representatives.
"Make local councils more responsive to the needs of your community by getting out and exercising your democratic right to vote.
"It is no good being dissatisfied about decisions some time further down the track - you have a chance now to make your voice heard by backing your choice of candidates."
Electors have until 6pm on May 6 to cast their votes. Postal voting packages have been sent to all eligible Joondalup electors, while York electors must vote in person at the Shire of York Administration Centre; Talbot Hall or Greenhills Hall between 8am and 6pm on May 6.
