The Albany Waterfront project is a step closer to reality with the design and construction tender for the project's pedestrian bridge being released this week.
The pedestrian bridge is the first stage of construction for the project. It will enable people to walk from Stirling Terrace across to the waterfront piazza and the new Albany Entertainment Centre.
Under the recently completed master plan for the Albany Waterfront project, the bridge will also have a separate exit, giving access to the visitors centre where the Bibbulmun Track starts.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said she was excited about seeing construction of the pedestrian bridge get under way.
"This bridge is an important first step for the project," Ms MacTiernan said.
"With the establishment of the community reference group, I expect there to be even more local input into the Albany waterfront."
Pre-qualified Western Australian bridge-building companies will be asked to take part in the tender process.
Construction of the pedestrian bridge is expected to begin in early May and completed by the end of October.
Each company will be required to submit detailed designs based on architectural requirements specified for the project.
"Albany has one of the most spectacular natural harbours in the world and the State Government, through LandCorp, is working to ensure the quality of the project reflects its settings," the Minister said.
"I expect the development of Albany's new waterfront will create a world-class entertainment and tourism precinct, while creating a safer harbour for professional fishing, charter and recreational vessels."
Local member Peter Watson MLA also welcomed the call for tenders.
"The local community will be very happy to see this project progress to the construction phase," Mr Watson said.
The Albany Waterfront project will deliver significant environmental, social and economic benefits to the region.
