A major $4.5million redevelopment of Thornlie Senior High School, including a new science room and an air-cooled gymnasium, was officially opened by Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today.
Ms Ravlich said the extensions also included a new performing arts centre and a refurbished information technology centre.
"Today's students are benefiting from these state of the art facilities," she said.
"Thornlie Senior High School has a strong focus on information technology and as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offers nationally recognised qualifications in nine industry areas.
"It is also a specialist sports school and is the only public school which offers rugby as a sport."
The extensions opened today include:

  • a new commercial kitchen, so hospitality students can work in a commercial environment;
  • a new ITC wing which allows students access to high specification computer technology;
  • a childcare/craft room where technology students can design and construct their creations and childcare students can conduct playgroups;
  • a refurbished technology area so students can build computers and networks;
  • new purpose-built classrooms;
  • a performing arts centre for dance, music and drama; and
  • a new brick-paved quadrangle which is partly funded by the City of Gosnells.
The Minister said the Carpenter Government was committed to providing all Western Australians with access to a world-class education system.
"The Labor Government promised to build 39 new schools in four years at a cost of $400million," she said.
"We have already announced, planned or built 23 new primary schools and 12 new secondary schools, bringing the total number of new schools to 35.
"This massive construction program is the biggest in more than 20 years and will deliver new and better schools to improve the quality of public education facilities for students and teachers throughout WA."
