Tiger Airways touches down in Perth
23/3/07
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale says tonight's arrival of the inaugural Tiger Airways flight from Singapore into Perth's International Airport is a significant new development for Western Australia's tourism industry.
"The Singapore tourism market is important to WA and visitor numbers are expected to rise dramatically as travellers take advantage of these new flights," she said.
"The introduction of Tiger Airways is an exciting opportunity for WA to grow its South-East Asian tourism market, which has increasingly turned to low-cost airlines in planning holidays.
"Low-cost flights mean holiday-makers to our State save money on airfares and, in turn, spend more money during their visit."
The Minister said passengers on the inaugural Perth flight would receive a commemorative gold coin produced by the Perth Mint to mark the occasion.
"Passengers will receive a warm reception, including a welcome to country from indigenous performers and a performance by a local Singaporean lion dance troop," she said.
"These will be the first 170 passengers from more than 70,000 expected between Singapore and Perth during 2007."
Tiger Airways will fly into Perth four times a week until May, when the airline will start daily flights.
