Time running out for Working with Children Checks
23/11/06
Many self-employed people and new paid employees who work with children have been urged to apply for a Working with Children Check before the December 31 deadline.
The checks, which came into effect on January 1, aim to prevent people with certain types of criminal records working or volunteering with children.
Community Development Minister David Templeman said that under the new law, those working with children in certain areas of child-related work were obliged to apply for a Working with Children Card by December 31.
"This means that many self-employed people, such as music tutors, babysitters and coaches, will now need a Working with Children Check," Mr Templeman said.
"With Christmas fast approaching, I would urge retailers to ensure that Santa Claus has a Working with Children Check.
"Although checks of criminal records are already made in many parts of the community, this more rigorous assessment significantly improves the safety of children.
"So even if you have a standard police clearance, I want to make it clear that that is not enough and you must apply for this new, more rigorous check before the end of the year."
The Minister said the new laws had the broadest scope of any in Australia and allowed for national criminal convictions, spent convictions and charges to be assessed.
"These checks aim to protect children better from people working in positions of trust who may physically or sexually harm children," he said.
"This is part of the Carpenter Government's commitment to protecting our children and making WA a better, safer place to live in."
Mr Templeman said applications could be made through Australia Post outlets and it was important to read the instructions carefully before making an application.
