Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich has announced an immediate plan of action to cater for students and staff affected by a fire at Victoria Park Primary School overnight.
Ms Ravlich said a temporary administration building and staffroom would be moved to the site as soon as possible and in the meantime, the school library would be converted into a makeshift administration area and classroom.
The school administration block was severely burnt in the fire. However, an assessment of the site this morning determined that the school had not suffered structural damage.
"The school staffroom and administration area has been burnt out and it is expected it could take eight to ten weeks to have the building stripped and refitted," the Minister said.
"The fire has also caused smoke damage to four classrooms and an outdoor verandah area."
Ms Ravlich said students in Years Three, Four, Five, Six and Seven would be able to return to school tomorrow.
Most of the affected students would continue to be taught on site, but buses would transport some students to nearby schools to undertake lessons while their classrooms were being cleaned up.
"It is hoped the classrooms for Years Three to Four and Five will be cleaned up and ready for students by Thursday and the other two classrooms occupied by Years Six and Seven are expected to be ready by next Monday," the Minister said.
"I want parents, students and the school community to know we are pulling out all stops to make sure the primary school can return to normal as quickly as possible after this terrible incident."
