Tourism Minister Sheila McHale today welcomed Tiger Airways' announcement that it would start daily flights between Melbourne and Perth.
Ms McHale said that from December 1, 2007, the low-cost carrier would offer airfares between the two cities from just $59.95 (including taxes and charges) one-way.
"This is an exciting opportunity for Western Australian tourism as this route boosts the number of leisure travellers coming into our State from Victoria," she said.
"Low-cost carriers have been successful in increasing tourism by offering competitive prices and attracting more visitors, so we see the Perth-Melbourne route as having real tourism potential.
"Low-cost flights also mean holiday-makers to WA save money on airfares and, in turn, spend more money during their visit."
The Minister said Tourism Western Australia and Perth Airport had worked closely with Tiger Airways to get this route off the ground.
"Tiger Airways has been flying in WA skies from Singapore since March this year and has proven to be a strong competitor," Ms McHale said.
"With significant competition between airlines servicing domestic travellers in recent times, we are set to see even more value for the travellers' dollar."
The State Government commits $500,000 each year to attract new or existing airlines to start new routes or expand their current capacity and frequency into WA. The funds are provided as incentives and marketing strategies to promote these new routes.
