Construction work has begun on the new wastewater treatment pond for Wiluna, which will see a single pond replace the three currently located in the town.
Launching the site works in Wiluna today, Local Government and Regional Development Minister Jon Ford said the Carpenter Government would spend $4.2million to move the wastewater treatment ponds in Wiluna away from the town.
The new pond is expected to be operating by June 2007 and will be located south of the town boundary.
Mr Ford said the new treatment facility would resolve a major public health problem for the community by removing the health risks associated with the close proximity and the condition of the existing ponds.
"This new treatment pond is just part of the Government's commitment to addressing important health and amenity issues facing the community of Wiluna," he said.

The Minister said the Water Corporation would now take over the scheme from the shire.
Murchison-Eyre MLA John Bowler said the new facility would help improve the overall standard of life in Wiluna.
"I am proud of what we have been able to achieve with this project, along with the funding we have earmarked for a new school and training centre and a new pool in the town," Mr Bowler said.
"This has been a great partnership between the Wiluna shire council and the State Government and we look forward to working together on other significant projects in the future."
The current system treats septic tank effluent from 40 properties in Wiluna, delivering the treated wastewater to three evaporation ponds around the town. This system is owned, operated and maintained by the various users with assistance from the Shire of Wiluna.
