Champion Lakes - Western Australia's only purpose-built rowing facility - was officially opened today hosting its maiden event, the Champion Lakes Regatta.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister and Armadale MLA Alannah MacTiernan joined 500 competitors and a big crowd of spectators on the shores of Champion Lakes for the event.
"This regatta is the first event of its kind in WA," Ms MacTiernan said.
"We have rowing, canoeing and dragon boating competitors here showcasing their sports on this purpose-built rowing course."
Champion Lakes is a $26million facility developed by the Armadale Redevelopment Authority and features a 55ha lake with a 2,000m international standard rowing course and warm-up lake.
"Numerous water sports have expressed a keen interest in the facility and we expect it will encourage a new generation of competitors," the Minister said.
"The establishment of the Champion Lakes Boating Club will also provide a fantastic opportunity for the local community to participate in a totally new sporting and recreational experience."
Ms MacTiernan also officially opened the $2.8million vehicle and pedestrian emergency access bridges to the course's facility island which will allow sporting clubs to store boats and equipment.
Champion Lakes will be used for training and competition throughout the year with a recreation area, cycling and walking paths, a sand beach and public facilities provided for the local community.
LandCorp is developing high quality residential land adjacent to Champion Lakes with the first stage being brought to market in early 2008.
