Year Sevens to stay on at Hopetoun Primary School
20/12/07
Education and Training Minister Mark McGowan has given the go-ahead for Year Seven students to continue at Hopetoun Primary School in 2008.
Hopetoun Primary School opened this year as a kindergarten to Year Seven school and it was expected to change to a kindergarten to Year Six school in 2009, with Year Seven students moving to Ravensthorpe District High School.
"In March this year, I announced the normal school structure for public primary students would cater for kindergarten to Year Seven," Mr McGowan said.
"The Hopetoun community has demonstrated a preference, and an expectation, for their children to remain in the town for Year Seven, which aligns with my policy, so the current situation will continue."
Enrolments at Hopetoun Primary School are growing rapidly as families look to settle and raise their children in the booming seaside town.
"The majority of students enrolled at Hopetoun Primary School are from families working in the local resource industry," the Minister said.
"We are seeing more people shift their families closer to their workplace to cut back on travelling time so they can spend more time together.
"We are conscious of the potential for the population to grow even more so, as enrolments increase, additional transportable classrooms will be provided.
"Stage two additions to the school will be considered in future capital works programs."
Mr McGowan said the Government would consult with communities on a case-by-case basis about what was needed by new schools to accommodate students.
