Four indigenous communities in the West Kimberley will receive significant increases in funding as a result of the Carpenter Government's renewed focus on housing and infrastructure in remote Western Australia.
Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts made the announcement while visiting Bidyadanga, south of Broome today.
"I am proud to announce that the communities of Bidyadanga, Ardyaloon (Bardi), Djarindjin and Lombadina will receive $18million over the next three financial years.
"This is compared with $3.3million in 2005-06," Mrs Roberts said.
"What we are attempting to do is redress the balance and provide infrastructure and housing that will enable these communities to work even more efficiently and effectively."
The funding will be used to build roads, improve water, electricity and sewage services, as well as maintaining, repairing and building houses.
"The 15 new houses in Bidyadanga will make a huge difference to this community, as will the replacement of 15 homes in Ardyaloon (Bardi) and the 10 new houses planned," the Minister said.
Mrs Roberts was accompanied to the Bidyadanga community by Kimberley MLA Carol Martin.
"These people live in one of the most remote places in the world, so it is great to see this much-needed funding is being provided," Mrs Martin said.
Mrs Roberts will visit the three other communities - Ardyaloon, Djarindjin and Lombadina - over the next two days.
