The Cook Labor Government is funding critical infrastructure for the Kimberley region as it prepares for an incredible astronomical event.

Thousands of domestic and international visitors are expected to travel to the East Kimberley to view a total solar eclipse taking place on 22 July 2028.

With a totality period of more than five minutes, the Kimberley Total Solar Eclipse is one of the longest eclipses, on a global scale, to occur this century.

To prepare for this event, the Cook Labor Government is providing $24.6 million from 2026-27 to 2028-29 to ensure critical infrastructure and public safety services are in place.

Key works include upgrades to camping sites, water and wastewater facilities in Kununurra, and regional telecommunications capacity.

The funding also includes a proposed public viewing site along the Great Northern Highway within the line of totality.

This investment will provide a legacy that supports ongoing tourism development, large-scale event capacity, and economic development opportunities in the region, including for Aboriginal people and businesses.
