Construction begins on RPH emergency department expansion
- Construction has officially commenced on the $807.3 million Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Department Expansion Project
- Completed works will provide expanded emergency department capacity, improved access, and additional bed capacity to meet growing demand
- Work will take place with minimal disruption to existing hospital services and uninterrupted patient care
- Project funded through Cook Labor Government's $2 billion Building Hospital's Fund
Construction is underway on the foundation works for the Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) Emergency Department (ED) Expansion Project, which will transform emergency care in Western Australia.
The $807.3 million expansion project is funded through the $2 billion Building Hospitals Fund, which forms part of the Cook Labor Government's record $5.5 billion investment in health infrastructure.
The new ED will be located on the north-western end of the RPH campus on Wellington Street in the Perth CBD, just 500 metres from the site's current ED.
The multistorey build will include two dedicated floors for a significantly expanded ED, boosting treatment spaces and increasing overall hospital services and capacity.
Importantly, construction on the project can progress while the existing ED continues to operate, ensuring uninterrupted care for patients.
Once complete, the project will deliver:
- a larger ED with increased acute care and fast-track capacity;
- additional ambulance bays and improved patient flow;
- more inpatient capacity to support future growth; and
- connections to existing hospital via a link, to integrate care and operations.
This project is the starting point for the long-term redevelopment of the RPH precinct, with master planning currently being undertaken to guide future development in the most effective way.
The high-level masterplan will consider current and future models of care for the hospital and transport links and will seek to optimise the use of the precinct for both health and non-health community benefits.
This masterplan will prioritise the needs of the hospital, including any expansion opportunities, to ensure that RPH can continue to provide patient care now and into the future.
Planning work is currently underway with a detailed masterplan expected to be delivered later in the year.
