The Cook Labor Government is supporting the delivery of 56 new social housing apartments in East Perth that will provide safe, secure and stable housing for Western Australians.

Registered Community Housing Provider St Bart's Housing has received a $15 million capital grant from the Cook Labor Government to deliver an eight-storey development, which will provide 56 one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartments.

The project is also supported by a $10.6 million commitment from the Albanese Government through the Housing Australia Future Fund.

The project will be built by Georgiou Group and will be delivered to the Silver Level Livable Housing Australia design standard.

The ground floor of the residential tower will include a lobby, office accommodation, and other functional areas to support residents and the broader community.

The Albanese Government will also contribute a further $30 million for a new 80-bed aged care facility, to provide care for older Western Australians with a history of homelessness.

The Cook Labor Government, through Lotterywest, will also be contributing $4.5 million towards the internal and external communal spaces within the purpose-built residential aged care setting.

St Bart's has been a leading not-for-profit provider of accommodation and outreach services for vulnerable Western Australians experiencing or at risk of homelessness, mental health challenges, trauma, and hardship for more than 60 years.

The site is located close to public transport, community services, Claisebrook Cove on the Swan River, and Royal Perth Hospital.

Upon completion, this development will add to the more than 4,200 social homes delivered through the WA Labor Government's record $10.8 billion investment in housing measures since 2021.

Comments attributed to Housing and Works Minister and Perth MLA John Carey:

"This development will provide 56 more social homes for Western Australians who need housing support.

"By investing $15 million in this project, we are supporting the delivery of modern, accessible homes close to the city with strong links to transport, health services, and amenities.

"It's part of a record $10.8 billion spend on housing since 2021, with thousands of social homes already delivered."

Comments attributed to Homelessness Minister Matthew Swinbourn:

"The Cook Labor Government is committed to working closely with the community housing sector to increase the supply of social housing and deliver more housing options for vulnerable Western Australians.

"St Bart's has a long history of supporting vulnerable people in our community, and this project will enable the organisation to expand its capacity to provide long-term housing for those experiencing housing insecurity.

"I also welcome the commencement of construction on a facility that will meet the needs of older Western Australians that have had a history of homelessness. We know that this cohort of people often face difficulties in mainstream aged care facilities, so having this 80-bed aged care facility designed to meet their needs will see better outcomes for this vulnerable group."

Comments attributed to Aged Care and Seniors and Women's Minister Simone McGurk:

"A concerning trend we are seeing around the country is the growing number of older women facing housing insecurity and homelessness.

"We are pleased to be able to work with St Bart's to deliver safe and secure housing for vulnerable Western Australians.

"As well as providing housing, this project's delivery of appropriate residential aged care will ensure older Western Australians who have been homeless or are at risk of homelessness can age with dignity, in safety, and with specialised care."

Comments attributed to Federal Member for Perth Patrick Gorman:

"Hearing Andrew's story, a resident at St Bart's in East Perth, showed exactly why secure housing matters.

"Labor is proud to partner with St Bart's and the WA Government to deliver this commitment for Perth.

"Building more homes is one of the biggest challenges facing our country. Today's milestone shows the Albanese Labor Government is delivering the real change Australia needs.

"Every Australian deserves the chance to age with dignity. That is why our government is investing in a new 80-bed aged care facility. Protecting our most vulnerable Australians."

Comments attributed to St Bart's CEO Samantha Drury:

"These projects represent St Bart's vision: to walk beside people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness and create places where they can belong, heal, and age with dignity.

"Thank you to the Albanese Australian Government and the Cook State Government for your major commitment and investment towards social housing and aged care and making these projects possible."
