The Cook Labor Government has launched a dedicated recruitment pathway for WA Health to support newly qualified Aboriginal nurses and midwives applying for transition-to-practice programs.

The Aboriginal Application Pathway expands opportunities for Aboriginal nurses and midwives beyond what is offered via the GradConnect Program and provides a culturally safe entry point into the workforce.

The pathway recognises the unique skills, perspectives, and contributions Aboriginal nurses and midwives bring to the health workforce.

Eligible applicants can access WA Health's graduate nursing and midwifery programs and are offered a fixed-term annual contract as an entry-level registered nurse or midwife, with support to progress towards permanent employment opportunities.

The pathway offers one-on-one support throughout the recruitment process and an extended six-month application period.

Those who access the pathway can benefit from flexible onboarding options, access a cultural support partner, and receive support to transition into permanent employment.

Applications for the Aboriginal Application Pathway close on 1 February 2027.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"Supporting newly qualified Aboriginal nurses and midwives through transition-to-practice programs helps strengthen a culturally responsive and representative health workforce.

"Their insights and experiences meaningfully influence health outcomes for patients and strengthen the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and the broader Western Australian community.

"If you are eligible, I encourage you to apply for this valuable pathway, which will support you as you take the next step in your nursing or midwifery career."
