New appointment boosts strength of Synergy Board
- Former Minister Sue Ellery appointed non-executive director
- Considerable experience in governance, budget development, and strategic planning
- Appointment signals the importance of Synergy to the Cook Government's agenda
Former State Government Minister and Leader of the Legislative Council Sue Ellery has been appointed to the Board of Synergy as a non-executive director.
Along with the appointment of Western Australian Treasury Corporation chief executive officer Kaylene Gulich last month to the Synergy Board, this decision demonstrates the importance of Synergy to the Cook Government's vision of making WA a renewable energy powerhouse.
Ms Ellery's considerable experience as a senior leader in the Carpenter, McGowan and Cook governments strengthens the Synergy Board at a crucial time for the organisation as it looks to support the State's clean energy transition, increase its use of local content and support vulnerable customers.
Ms Ellery has had an extensive parliamentary career. Elected in 2001 to the Legislative Council, she retired in May 2025.
Most recently she was the Minister for Finance, Commerce and Women's Interests.
She also held the Education and Training, Child Protection, Community Services, Women's Interests, Seniors, and Volunteering portfolios from 2007 to 2022 and sat on the Expenditure Review Committee of Cabinet in the Cook and McGowan governments.
Her experience in dealing with vulnerable groups will assist Synergy with ensuring it supports customers facing financial difficulties.
Ms Ellery has been appointed for a fixed, three-year term concluding on 15 September 2028.
Comments attributed to Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
"As one of the most experienced and respected leaders in the State, Sue Ellery's insights and experience will be invaluable to Synergy as the organisation works to deliver the Cook Government's clean energy transition, procure more local content and support customers experiencing hardship.
"I am pleased she accepted the appointment, and I look forward to working with her as a member of the Synergy Board as we deliver on our plan to exit State-owned coal-fired power by 2030 and make Western Australia a renewable energy powerhouse."
